As the most popular cryptocurrency around, Bitcoin has a massive influence on other cryptocurrencies. But who do you think are the most influential people in Bitcoin?
When Bitcoin first appeared, many people associated it with cybercrime and had nothing good to say about the coin. Yet, BTC has grown into a solid, popular coin attracting many investors, including individuals and organisations.
This cryptocurrency didn’t just achieve overnight success. The collective efforts of brilliant minds helped and are still helping in the growth of the coin.
In this article, I list what I think are the most influential people in the Bitcoin space; those people who were instrumental in one way or the other in its growth.
Here’s a list of the 10 most influential people in Bitcoin :
Satoshi is the creator of Bitcoin. So far, no one knows the true identity of the person behind the creation of Bitcoin. The masked identity of Satoshi has made people wonder what the purpose behind the creation of Bitcoin was. Whatever that intent was, it does not change the fact that Bitcoin has made so much positive impact in the crypto space and beyond. To me, this makes Satoshi the number one most influential person in Bitcoin.
Szabo is renowned for his research on digital contracts and digital currency. He has been suspected to be Satoshi on several occasions due to his active role in the Bitcoin space, although he has often denied it.
In 1998, years before the emergence of Bitcoin, Nick Szabo designed a mechanism for a decentralised digital currency called “bit gold.” Although his design didn’t gain much support then, it helped in the creation of Bitcoin years later. Nick is also credited with coining the term “smart contracts”.
Finney was a renowned cryptographic activist. Until his death in 2014, he played a significant role in the world of crypto. For example, in 2004, Finney created the first reusable Proof of Work (PoW) system before Bitcoin. When Bitcoin was created, he took part in the first-ever Bitcoin transaction sent to him by Satoshi.
Gavin Andresen is one of the most active members of the Bitcoin community. He is considered the software’s lead maintainer after Nakamoto handed over the keys. This allows him to broadcast messages about critical network problems to all Bitcoin clients.
Andresen collaborated with Satoshi to develop the source code of Bitcoin. He is currently in control of the source code repository and the alert key handed to him by Satoshi.
Adam Back has been an active member of the Bitcoin community for years. He is the CCO at Spondoolies Tech Ltd. and the president of Blockstream. Back plays a major role in the Bitcoin space.
Andreas Antonopoulos is one of the influential people in the Bitcoin space. Antonopoulos is the author of “Mastering Bitcoin,” a technical guide to understanding Bitcoin. Antonopoulos has often described Bitcoin as “The Internet of Money”.
Roger Ver is known as “Bitcoin Jesus” in the crypto space. He started investing in Bitcoin start-ups and helped fund the seed rounds for the entire first generation of Bitcoin business.
Ver’s company, Memorydealers, is the first company to start accepting BTC as payment. He is also responsible for launching Bitcoinstore, the first website that accepted BTC as payment. In addition to his previous role in the Bitcoin space, Ver created Bitcoinbountyhunter.com to help tackle cybercriminals in the Bitcoin space. People get rewards for helping catch cybercriminals.
Just as Roger Ver is known as “Bitcoin Jesus,” Byrne is known as the “Bitcoin Messiah” and also the “Scourge of Wall Street” in the press. Byrne is the CEO of e-retailer giant Overstock.com, the first major retailer to accept BTC as payment. He is a firm believer in blockchains, and his support is not just for Bitcoin, but for the whole crypto world.
Silbert plays a highly significant role in the Bitcoin space. He founded the Digital Currency Group, a company specialising in developing Bitcoin infrastructure. They invest, start, and grow players in the Bitcoin space. Barry Silbert is also the founder of Grayscale Investments. This company is the largest asset manager in the crypto industry, totalling over $2 billion in assets under management.
Pieter Wuille used to work as a Site Reliability Engineer at Google before joining Blockstream. Wuille is a member of the Bitcoin code development team, and he created the BIP (Bitcoin Improvement Proposals) 30, 32, 42, and 62. Pieter Wuille is also the primary author of libsecp256k1, an efficient elliptic curve cryptography library for use in Bitcoin.
