The company is releasing 2,066 Rabbids avatars via Ethereum scaling network Polygon, with each Ubisoft NFT priced at 100 SAND, or approximately $78 at the time of writing. The avatars are themed around the Lunar New Year, and their designs will be unveiled to buyers this Friday.

Rabbids game world to launch on The Sandbox

On 28 February, The Sandbox will launch a Rabbids game world as part of its current open alpha test, featuring a limited number of playable experiences. The avatars are described as a "key to future utility" in The Sandbox, including potential access to future drops.

The Sandbox previously released NFT items and accessories with Rabbids themes and added Rabbids characters to its museum-like NFT Institute experience last September. However, today's mint is the first time users can buy these avatars for use in the game.

Ubisoft's Web3 expansion

Ubisoft was among the first major video game publishers to take notice of Web3 and begin experimenting with NFTs. The company has been experimenting with NFTs for some time, having previously released a Rabbids-themed NFT to benefit charity UNICEF and collaborated with Web3 fantasy sports startup Sorare on One Shot League.

The Rabbids NFT release follows Ubisoft's earlier announcement of plans to bring the characters to The Sandbox, made one year ago. The game publisher has previously supported NFT projects like Axie Infinity and Nine Chronicles and invested in Metaverse investment firm Animoca Brands and game maker Horizon.

The company has continued to make moves, investing in Horizon and joining the Mythos Foundation last fall. Ubisoft recently collaborated with cloud storage startup Aleph.im to develop fully decentralized smart contracts on Tezos.
