7.	Then you will be able to review the estimated transaction fee. Here check all the transaction details and proceed with ‘Continue’.

An imminent closure is looming for [Argo blockchain](/news/article/argo-blockchain-stock) as multi-million funding has been called off. It is a Bitcoin mining services firm which is listed on NASDAQ as well as London Stock Exchange. 

On 31 October 2022, the firm released an [official statement](https://www.londonstockexchange.com/news-article/ARB/strategy-company-ops-update/15693615) in which it revealed to its stakeholders that fundraising of £24 million, which is approximately $27 million, has been cancelled. It stated that “the Company no longer believes this subscription will be consummated.”

## No assurance of a definitive deal from Argo Blockchain

It has shared that it will explore other options to secure financing. However, it does not give any assurance for definitive deals. Nonetheless, it will strive to raise enough for the following year. 

It also revealed that if it failed to secure sufficient funds, it may “become negative cash flow.” If that happens, then the firm might have to curtail its operations or move towards complete closure. 

## What steps has Argo blockchain taken to optimise liquidity?

[Argo blockchain](https://argoblockchain.com/) is taking several steps to preserve cash and increase liquidity. It has sold around 3,843 new Bitmain S19J Pro machines for around £4.8 million ($5.6 million). It was the last batch from the original Bitmain order and was planned to be installed in October 2022. Currently, the company is maintaining a hash rate capacity of 2.5 EH per second. 

Earlier, the miner firm sold out mined [BTCs](/coins/btc) to pay off its debt to the crypto investment company Galaxy Digital. The company is owned by a well-known American investor Michael Novogratz. 

In June, the firm traded around 637 Bitcoins; in July, the total number of Bitcoins sold was 887. Elon Musk Twitter deal boosts DOGE by 140%

Ruja Ignatova, aka Cryptoqueen, the founder of OneCoin, has been on the run since 2017. She is allegedly involved in a multibillion-dollar [Ponzi scheme](/news/article/crypto-hacks-peaking-october).

Now, three of her associates have been presented to the German court. The charges against them include money laundering, fraud, and embezzlement.

On 18 October, a lawyer from Munich and a couple who allegedly worked for Cryptoqueen appeared in court. [Reportedly](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-18/onecoin-s-cryptoqueen-associates-face-german-fraud-trial#xj4y7vzkg), the lawyer helped Ignatova in purchasing two apartments in London. For this, it is claimed, he transferred $19.7 million (€20 million) from the Cayman Islands.

The couple was allegedly involved in payment handling for [OneCoin](https://www.investopedia.com/terms/o/onecoin.asp). Within a year, they are said to have dealt with $315.4 million (€320 million).

## Charges of $4 billion against Cryptoqueen’s OneCoin

Ruja Ignatova founded the OneCoin platform in 2014. She falsely claimed that it is a cryptocurrency and trade platform. However, after the US’s Federal Bureau of Investigation ([FBI](https://www.fbi.gov/)) investigated, it turned out to be a multi-level marketing [Ponzi scheme](/news/tag/scam). 

The platform allured investors through false claims. It claimed to run a token mining program, but in truth, there was not any. As per the investigation by the FBI, Cryptoqueen's company scammed more than three million investors. The total amount fraudulently obtained is roughly $4 billion.

Ruja Ignatova disappeared in 2017. Reportedly, she was last seen in Athens, Greece. The FBI also added her to the top ten most wanted criminals list. The bureau also announced a $100,000 reward for anyone who could share information about her whereabouts.

The OneCoin company also allegedly bribed the presidents of Bulgaria and Serbia. An economist, Angelina Lazar, claimed this in an [interview](https://cointelegraph.com/news/angelina-lazar-presidents-of-serbia-bulgaria-took-bribes-from-onecoin-my-war-against-onecoin-part-2). 

Previously, some other actors who were part of the company also faced charges. Christopher Hamilton was one of them. He faced [money laundering](/news/article/crypto-aml) charges involving around $105 million in embezzlement. 

Ruja’s brother, Konstantin Ignatov, was also accused of money laundering and pleaded guilty in 2019.

Cryptoqueen Associates Face Fraud Trial

South Africa's crypto regulation is being redefined as authorities recognise cryptocurrencies as financial products. It will likely include all digital tokens and assets in the country's financial laws. This move is a long-awaited step towards the complete [regularisation](/news/article/crypto-regulations) of the cryptocurrency market in the country.

On Wednesday, October 19, the South African crypto regulation authority, the FSCA (Financial Sector Conduct Authority), notified the public about the [update](https://www.greengazette.co.za/notices/financial-sector-conduct-authority-finansi%C3%ABle-sektor-gedragsowerheid-1350-financial-advisory-and-intermediary-services-act-37-2002-declaration-of-a-crypto-asset-as-a-financial_20221019-GGN-47334-00000.pdf). It briefed about the amendments in the Financial Advisory and Financial Intermediary Services Act (FAIS) of 2002.

## A new definition of cryptocurrencies

The notification declared that the cryptocurrencies are "a digital representation of value". Moreover, the new regulation defined them as values that can be traded, transferred, and reserved on a distributed ledger. It also maintained that these are to be recognised as "financial products".

Therefore, all the laws that apply to traditional financial products will also apply to cryptocurrencies. The update in the act is likely to boost the regulatory efforts in the country.

## Earlier indications for South Africa crypto regulation upgrade

Earlier this year, in July, the regulatory body and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) indicated upgrades in monetary laws. It specified that BTC and altcoins will be defined as assets. 

However, a [draft](/news/article/south-africa-crypto-regulation) for this declaration was published back in November 2020. After that, in mid-2021, The Intergovernmental Fintech Working Group (IFWG) proposed a complete roadmap in a [position paper on crypto assets](https://www.resbank.co.za/en/home/publications/publication-detail-pages/media-releases/2021/IFWG-CAR-Working-Group-position-paper-on-crypto-assets). 

It discussed in detail the anti-money laundering ([AML](/news/article/crypto-aml)) laws and the KYC (know your customer) requirements for service providers. Also, among the digital asset community in RSA, there were debates about their inclusion in monetary laws.

Thus, the step was highly anticipated among virtual asset holders and issuers. And now, they have finally made the reforms in the laws with the FAIS Act 2022. It will guide them on how the market will shape RSA in the coming years.

South Africa Crypto Regulation Update

[Santander](https://www.santanderbank.com/) is one of the largest networks of banks in the world, with its headquarters in Spain. In August, it announced that it would be launching the [Santander cryptocurrency trading](/news/article/santander-crypto) feature in Brazil. Now, the firm has proposed using the Brazilian CBDC (central bank digital currency), Digital Real, to tokenise assets. 

The firm intends to facilitate trading real estate properties and cars for crypto users in Brazil. For this reason, it will be working with the [FinTech ParFin](https://parfin.io/en/), which can assist in tokenising ownership rights and controlling the exchange of assets or currencies. 

## Santander cryptocurrency trading project for LIFT Challenge

The proposal for the tokenisation of real estate properties and vehicles through CBDCs is for the LIFT Challenge program. The Central Bank of Brazil initiated the program to promote the use of CBDC, Digital Real, in the country. The coin could be launched in 2024.

Along with Santander, several other institutions became part of it, including the [Mercado Bitcoin Exchange](https://www.mercadobitcoin.com.br/), [Itau Unibanco](https://www.itau.com/), and Visa do Brazil. Because of this initiative from the central bank, various use cases of the upcoming digital currency came forward.   

## Digitising real-world assets

The banking institution is looking to build an infrastructure that can digitise real-world assets. It will provide a complete platform to the users where they can easily buy or sell properties, vehicles, or other assets via virtual currency.

Bitcoin Storm Review: Is it Legit?

[Terraform Labs](https://www.terra.money/) is a platform that introduced one of the most popular algorithmic stablecoins, [TerraClassic USD (UST)](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/terrausd/). It also introduced a high-performing coin, LUNA, now known as LUNAClassic. But this year, its price declined from over $100 to $0. 

Since then, the platform has been making efforts to revive the project. Among them, one of the significant steps has been the launch of Terra 2.0. Meanwhile, the CEO of Terraform Labs, Do Kwon, has offered several Terra solutions for its restoration.

Here, we look at how the platform plans to move ahead and whether it will be restored in the near future!

## How did the crash happen?

The platform operates on a swapping mechanism of two crypto tokens; UST and LUNA. The former is an algorithmic stablecoin backed by USD. The latter powers the blockchain and helps maintain UST's value at $1.

This system allows holders to swap these tokens to get a guaranteed $1.

Unfortunately, this mechanism was not sustainable as there were no assets to back UST. That’s why when it lost its peg to the USD, it crippled the entire ecosystem. The algorithm failed when people started to burn LUNA to get UST’s $1. 

## Terra solutions proposed by Do Kwon

Right after the debacle, the founder and CEO of Terraform Labs took to Twitter to propose solutions for the recovery of the ecosystem. Kwon tried to reassure the LUNAtics community in a [thread](https://twitter.com/stablekwon/status/1524331171189956609) and gave possible Terra solutions. He acknowledged the selling pressure on LUNA and proposed a four-times increase in minting. The idea was to help strengthen TerraUSD so investors could cash it out anytime. Kwon also formally presented it at the governance forum. 

Terraform Lab’s CEO put forth another proposal, [1623](https://station.terra.money/). This endorsed the origin of a new chain, which was eventually accepted. Following the acceptance of this solution, a 2.0 version surfaced, and previous versions were renamed to classic ones. The ecosystem also airdropped the new tokens for the existing holders. This was a recovery plan to reset the network.

## Are Do Kwon's Terra solutions sustainable?

After the emergence of a new chain, [LUNA](/news/article/luna-price-prediction) has seen a quiet recovery period. Besides, it recently experienced a positive run where its price reached $6.72. However, currently, it's worth is again down to $2.72. It would be too early to comment on how this new blockchain is performing. But, indeed, there are some key issues.

First, this version has not influenced the current state of the classic UST. One reason behind that is the lack of investor confidence in the token. Investors are still not ready to exchange their dollars for this stablecoin. 

Second, its airdrops pledge 40% for the old token holders. This move will also be ineffective as it would distribute the amount unequally. Ideally, the holders who have more stakes should be compensated more. 

Moreover, another loophole about the airdrops is the involvement of the Anchor protocol. Not all investors had their tokens on this platform at the time of the collapse. So, how will it compensate wallets on other exchanges? 

Nonetheless, these Terra solutions are quite reasonable considering the extent of the collapse. However, for a sustainable solution, transparency is most important. Moreover, the lack of clarity about the $3.5 billion Bitcoin reserve, and the issue of Kwon hiding from the authorities, have increased the community’s suspicion. 

## Final thoughts 

Terraform Labs have gone through a disastrous collapse. So far, it is the worst in the crypto market’s short history. The loopholes in its algorithmic stablecoin resulted in draining billions from the market. Several Terra solutions were advanced for recovery. One major step towards it has been the fork of the blockchain.

It has helped in the recovery phase of the ecosystem. But there are still several issues with this approach. For sustenance, changes in algorithm and transparency are inevitable.

[Paxos Trust Company](https://paxos.com/) is an eminent name for providing infrastructure for cryptocurrency trades. Also, it is the first firm licensed by the Department of Financial Services of New York. The firm has joined forces with the crypto Mastercard to assist its trade program.

## Why is the credit card giant entering the crypto space?

Also, it was discovered that 65% of them would prefer virtual asset services from a trusted financial firm.

The team included Zhou Xuezhi, Liu Dongmin, and Song Shuang, all hailing from the Institute of World Economics and Politics, a research unit of CASS.  

The article was published towards the end of September. It shared the researchers’ views on Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) and insisted on a common token to reduce Asia’s dependence on USD. 

## How would the ‘China token’ work?

The analysts further proposed that this China token will work like most existing [CBDCs](/news/article/india-cbdc-launch). That’s why it would leverage distributed ledger technology (DLT). It would also be backed by a basket of currencies. In total, there may be 13 different currencies backing it to give it stability.

## How does Wonderland crypto work?

Wonderland is a decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO) that introduces a unique stablecoin. Its governance is through the use of the TIME token. The token has stability in its value as numerous other tokens back it. These include; Magic Internet Money (MIM), TIME-AVAX LP, Wonderful Memories (wMEMO), and wAVAX. 

Wonderland is an Olympus DAO fork built on the Avalanche Network. Its ecosystem works on the Proof-of-reserve (PoR) mechanism. 

PoR requires bond reserves for validation. If you own different tokens through which you can mint TIME, you can become a validator.
Though the DAO is built on the Avalanche Network, it has cross-chain property. That's why it is compatible with various other tokens. TIME is distinct from most stablecoins pegged with fiat currencies. It gets its consistency and stability through the basket of assets.

## Wonderland crypto price

The claims of stability and consistency have fallen short for the project. The ecosystem's major coin, TIME, is in shambles. Also, the TIME-AVAX LP and wAVAX coins have been discontinued and cannot be used for minting TIME. 

Currently, TIME's price is just over $11. This year, the token's price has declined by more than 95%. In November 2021, its price stood at over $9000. Since then, it has continued on a downward trend. Also, there is no sign of stability in its price.

Several factors are at play regarding the downfall of Wonderland crypto.

### Here are a few of them:

#### 1. The buyback strategy
wMEMO is a wrapped stablecoin which has a set value. As its price started to fall below this value, the firm opted for the buyback strategy. To increase the cost of wMEMO, the firm used its treasury fund to buy the coins from the market. Temporarily, there was an improvement in its value. However, it did not work well in the longer run. The bearish market continuously affected the coin's price.

#### 2. Overleveraging & Investors liquidating their assets
Secondly, as the buyback strategy was public, many investors joined the campaign to make profits. They took loans to purchase more wMEMOs and pledged their existing coins as security. So, when the value of wMEMO continued to decrease, investors liquidated their funds to pay off debts. With more liquidation, the price dropped further. This jeopardised the firm's financial state as the overall debt constantly increased. 
The debts also caused a delay in the airdrops. Airdrops are a percentage of coins acquired as a venture capital fund. Three airdrops needed to be distributed among investors between December and January. However, all of them got delayed, causing more suspicion among investors. 

#### 3. CFO Sifu's controversial background
One of the significant blows for Wonderland crypto was the controversial background of its CFO. Investors started to lose confidence as its pseudo-anonymous CFO, Sifu, turned out to be Michael Patryn. He is a convicted felon for the $100 million scam through a Canadian exchange. Patryn disappeared with the money in 2019 and launched Wonderland in 2021.

Patryn also worked with the lending firm, Abracadabra and MIM for this project. Meanwhile, Abracadabra Money founder, Daniele Sestagalli, declared that he knew about Patryn. This received significant criticism from the industry, and his venture, Popsicle Finance, also suffered. 

#### 4. Sifu's exit with an alleged rug pull
An alleged rug pull was another reason behind the project's downfall. It was not only investors who took leveraged positions because of buyback. But the CFO himself withdrew millions from the treasury before exiting. Though the firm tried to cover it up as compensation for his services, it raised many questions about a rug pull attempt.

Although we have yet to reach the month's midpoint, the firm has predicted that hacking activities will be peaking this month. The total value hacked in October 2022 has already reached [$718 million](https://twitter.com/chainalysis/status/1580312145451180032). 

Besides, 2022 will also be the biggest year so far for crypto [hacks](/news/article/binance-hack), according to Chainalysis. Previously, 2021 saw the highest rate of [cyber-attacking activities](/news/article/crypto-youtube-pennywise) on blockchains. However, at the rate these incidents are happening currently, they will likely surpass the total number of hacked amounts in 2021. 

## Crypto hacks in October, so far

The month has already seen some major hacking incidents. In total, there have been 11 instances where cryptocurrencies have been exploited. Meanwhile, on October 11 alone, there were four cyberattacks on blockchains and DeFi platforms.

## 2022 is to be a record year for crypto hackers

This year is also going to be a record 12 months for hackers. Last year, cybercriminals exploited around $3 billion. The ongoing year has already seen over 125 blockchain hacking incidents. As per Chainalysis, the last 12-month amount will likely be surpassed if this trend persists.
 
Though the market is going through a [severe downturn](/news/article/bitcoin-price-crash-celsius), cybercriminals continually make more hacking attempts. Meanwhile, there has been a shift in projects they are targeting in the market. 

Previously, centralised exchanges were the main target of hackers. However, later they started focussing more on the DeFi protocols. This year, 90% of the hacking incidents were also on the DeFi protocols. On the other hand, these incidents are affecting the investors' confidence in DeFi projects.

4.	There is no whitepaper or other documentation available for the users.

5.	There is a lack of information about the founding members of this project.

6.	Most scam-detecting sites give it a low trust rating.

7.	The platform is not present on any social platform, so there is no way users can get updates about it. 

There are many red flags that validate the view of GEX being a scam.     

## Is Globex crypto a scam? 

It is not possible to rule out it being a scam when so many indicators exist. The platform has almost no online presence currently. Therefore, it seems like a serious rug-pull scheme, where scammers disappear after getting their clients' funds.  

Moreover, user reviews also hint toward its deceptive scheme. Reviews on Trustpilot point out that the platform claims to give free [Ethereum](/coins/eth). Yet, later it asks about depositing an initial amount. Also, some reviews say that scammers contact you and offer free Ethereum.
