A significant aspect of the update was the change in the transaction fee system to improve user experience and save ETH on gas prices without sacrificing confirmation times. 

In the legacy system prior to the London hard fork Ethereum update, transaction fees could be very volatile and transaction priority would favour whales on the network who could afford exorbitant transfer costs.

Transaction fees before the update was based on a first-price auction mechanism. This works by senders specifying fee bids, also known as gas prices, they are willing to pay for their transaction and miners choosing the transactions with the highest bid to include in the block.

This resulted in congestion, increased gas prices and often users would need to pay more transaction fees (gas fees) than others on the same block.

The London hard fork Ethereum update removed the first-price auction mechanism. Gas fees are now made up of a mandatory algorithmically determined base fee and a priority fee (tip).

The base fee is paid in Ether and can fluctuate depending on the load of the network. The networks aim is to keep the utilisation rate near 50%. If the block is over 50% full, the base fee automatically increases. If the block falls below 50% full, the base fee automatically decreases. This regulates network congestion and allows for transaction costs to be set automatically for wallet providers.

Another major aspect of the update is that part of the base fee is burned i.e., eliminated from circulation which will begin to reduce the supply of Ether and potentially increase the digital assets price.

ETH which has a price of approximately 2334 pound per coin at the time of writing 5 May 2022 has no maximum limit to the mining of Ether which makes it an inflationary cryptocurrency. The EIP-1559 burning mechanism which will slowly reduce the supply of Ether has been viewed as a positive step in making Ethereum a deflationary asset in the long term. Experts suggest this implemented proposal alone will not make ETH deflationary as the nominal amount of gas burned won’t outpace network inflation. ## What is Terra Luna?

Terra Labs, a South Korean blockchain development company, designed the project Terra network, which comprises two cryptocurrencies: TerraUSD (UST) and Luna (LUNA).

The Terra network authorises blockchain developers to make custom blockchains and DApps for a broad range of use cases, but typically operates on Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) algorithm. The network focuses on DeFi, NFT projects, and Web 3.0 apps. It's linked to other significant blockchains, including Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, and Harmony, and is deemed a powerful player in the DeFi world.

Terra network possesses two native tokens, UST and LUNA, and both have different functions. UST is a stablecoin, implying its value is pegged to $1 and is utilised to risk or shift tokens when markets become jerky. In contrast, LUNA is a more tradable investment whose price fluctuates depending on market circumstances.

Both coins are intrinsically linked, with UST pegged to LUNA using something named "algorithmic pegging". Typically, a stablecoin is funded 1:1 with a tangible asset, like gold or dollars, ensuring investors that the value will stay at $1 (or reasonably close).

Algorithmic pegging operates a smart contract to alter the value of the linked assets automatically. In this case, the smart contract automatically uses LUNA tokens to mint new UST tokens, maintaining the UST price stable and LUNA deflationary (theoretically). So, no matter the market conditions, 1 UST can consistently be redeemed for or coined for exactly 1 LUNA.

## Reason Behind Terra Luna Collapse

The sudden Terra Luna collapse took place in early May 2022, when the value of UST unexpectedly began falling from its $1 peg.

The unexpected price fall caused a massive number of LUNA to be minted to stable the UST value, saturating the market with LUNA tokens. This pushed the price down and smashed LUNA's price overnight. Indeed, LUNA moved from a top 10 crypto to descending outside the top 150 overnight. Its circulating market supply tripled from about 350 million to more than 1.4 billion in just two days.

Terra Labs had assembled around $3 billion in [Bitcoin](/coins/btc) to begin building a reserve. It wasn't nearly sufficient to stop the market drop. The company was compelled to vend its resources (against a Bitcoin market that has also lost significant value over the same course). Ultimately, there was no more $1 value of LUNA for every UST, implying both cryptos would drop altogether without any clear path to recovery.

UST is an algorithmic stablecoin. Eventually, its stability is naturally related to market volatility. When support for either related cryptocurrency becomes a problem, there is always a possibility that one or both will collapse and witness a market fall.

Now, with the value of UST still not redeemed to its $1, Terra is trying to raise the supply of LUNA to boost the burn rate and saturate the market with coins, putting more downward pressure on the crypto.

## Will Terra Luna recover?

Amid the market crash, Terra Labs CEO Do Kwon presented a Terra Luna recovery strategy to stabilise the present crypto destruction. According to his plan, he will work to stabilise the Layer-1 ecosystem.

The strategy is:

•	A new LUNA with a supply of 1 billion will be spread across the community
•	40% of this LUNA will be given to existing holders before the depeg
•	A further 40% will be given to present UST holders
•	10% will go to current LUNA holders
•	the last 10% will go to a community pool for development

This recovery strategy prioritises the Terra Layer-1 as Kwon and the community strive to protect the broader ecosystem.
Kwon said Terra Luna needs a growing community to make its blockspace valuable again.

"The only way to do this is to make sure that token holders before the attack commenced, the most loyal community members and builders, stick around to keep providing value," he added.

Terra Luna Collapse: Why Did It Happen

DOGE-1, a 40-kilogram cube satellite that will fly as a payload on a Falcon 9 rocket, was unveiled on Sunday by Geometric Energy Corporation.  

DOGE-1 is a satellite that will be launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and will circle the moon to "collect lunar-spatial intelligence via onboard sensors and cameras with integrated communications and computing capabilities."

According to the news statement, Dogecoin is advanced enough to fund a commercial moon expedition fully and will be used for all lunar transactions between the two firms.

This expedition will demonstrate the usage of cryptocurrencies in space and build the framework for interplanetary commerce, according to SpaceX Vice President of Commercial Sales Tom Ochinero in a statement published by Geometric Energy.

## Social Media Hints

There was a lot of "moon Dogecoin" chatter after hints on social media.

The journey, scheduled for the first quarter of 2022, follows Elon Musk's 1 April statement pledging to place Dogecoin "on the literal moon". Not everyone initially took it seriously as he tweeted about it on April Fool's Day. Musk added, "SpaceX is going to put a literal Dogecoin on the literal moon." In cryptocurrency parlance, this is known as "shilling" – the practice of constantly promoting a specific coin to increase its price. He said that the expedition would be paid for in DOGE and that it would be the "first crypto in space". However, the quantity of Dogecoin involved in the transaction with SpaceX was not revealed.

## Musk Refers to Dogecoin as a 'Hustle'

It happened when the price of Dogecoin fell further after the technology mogul claimed on television that it was a "hustle." On Sunday, Dogecoin dropped more than a third of its value when Mr. Musk referred to it as a "hustle" while presenting the Saturday Night Live comedy sketch television show. Mr. Musk's recent comments on the voyage to the moon have aided in transforming the once-obscure digital currency into the world's fourth-largest cryptocurrency. 

According to cryptocurrency data tracker [CoinGecko.com](https://www.coingecko.com/), it has increased by more than 800% in the previous month, with a total market value of more than $70 billion. In May 2018, Musk told reporters, "It's intended to do 10 or more flights with no refurbishment between each trip.

"We believe the [Falcon 9] boosters can fly at least 100 times before being decommissioned."

However, the moon Dogecoin mission is still taking shape, and it is presently planned to be orbital.

According to a Geometric news statement, the mission will launch an 88-pound (40-kilogram) CubeSat (appropriately named Doge-1) on a mission to acquire "lunar-spatial intelligence... with integrated communications and computational capabilities." The cargo will also include video surveillance, the specifics of which are unknown. It is likely to include sensors and cameras. 

In the opinion of Geometric CEO Samuel Reid, the transaction solidified DOGE as a unit of account for lunar business in the space industry. The organisation also promised to do all future missions in Dogecoin, citing rewards such as its security and the ability to conduct transactions even after business hours.  

## A Difficult Week for DOGE

Despite all the wonderful news and enthusiasm, Dogecoin has had a difficult week. Its value has fluctuated for various causes, but Elon Musk has been at the centre of it all. Overall, the cryptocurrency has returned about 10,000% this month and rebounded late Sunday evening after a huge drop on Saturday following Musk's SNL appearance.

Dogecoin's position in terms of real-world utility has recently solidified. AMC Theatres in North America confirmed last month that crypto payments could be made using Dogecoin.

The ascension of Dogecoin to the moon will mark a new milestone in the crypto realm. SpaceX, as a pioneer in private space exploration, is continuously creating precedents for humanity's future in space, whether purposefully or unintentionally.


















To the Moon: Dogecoin into Space

The value of Luna plunged sharply on Wednesday, from $6.75 to a little over $1. As of Thursday afternoon, the currency was worth only $0.02. The sibling token of the controversial stable currency [TerraUSD](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/terrausd/) is now effectively worthless.

According to Coin Gecko statistics, Luna fell to $0 on Friday, a remarkable decline for a cryptocurrency formerly valued at more than $100. 

TerraUSD, sometimes known as UST, is designed to be tied to the US dollar one-to-one. When the UST decoupled from the dollar earlier this week, values plummeted. UST has lost its peg and was trading at 12 cents on Friday, according to statistics.

Traders prefer to acquire currencies such as [Bitcoin](/coins/btc), [Ether](/coins/eth), and [Dogecoin](/coins/doge) using digital assets tied to the dollar since only the price of the crypto asset changes when they buy or sell. 

## Stablecoins Rise in Popularity

Stablecoins enable quick trade without the lengthy settlement timeframes associated with government-issued currencies, which might take days. If a person wants to sell Bitcoin and immediately lock in their dollar winnings, they might do so by purchasing a stablecoin on major cryptocurrency exchanges.

UST and Luna are connected. UST is referred to as an algorithmic stable currency, which means there is an expectation that its $1 peg will be managed by the underlying code. This is fundamentally different from other stable currencies, such as tether and USDC, which are backed by real-world assets like bonds. UST has no real-world reserves. 

Algorithmic stablecoins are not backed by assets, instead relying on financial engineering to maintain their ties to the dollar. Previously, the algorithmic stable currency TerraUSD kept its $1 price by depending on traders to perform an arbitrage function between Terra and Luna values. 

When Terra went below the peg, merchants would "burn" the stablecoin, taking it out of circulation by swapping TerraUSD for $1 worth of fresh Luna units. This move lowered TerraUSD's supply and increased its price. When the value of TerraUSD soared beyond $1, traders might burn Luna and generate new TerraUSD, boosting the supply of the stablecoin and bringing its price back down to $1. Traders said a series of significant withdrawals from Anchor Protocol, a crypto bank established by developers at Mr. Kwon's business Terraform Labs, was the cause for the decline. It began during the 7-8 May weekend and spiralled out of control the following Monday. Digital currency investors use such services to earn interest on their coins by lending them out. 

The Anchor platform held most of the stablecoin's supply. According to the platform's website, investors had invested more than $14 billion in TerraUSD in Anchor by early May. Large trades eroded TerraUSD's $1 value during that May weekend. 

Because of the volatility, many investors withdrew their TerraUSD from Anchor and sold the coin. As a result, additional investors withdrew from Anchor, causing a chain reaction of more withdrawals and selling. TerraUSD deviated from its dollar peg as the supply-demand equilibrium was disrupted. Luna, its sister coin, has also seen its value fall. The crypto community speculates that an anonymous trader triggered the run as part of an "attack" on the stable currency. 

## Anchor TerraUSD Deposits Drop

According to the company's website, Anchor's TerraUSD deposits had dropped to around $1.6 billion on 13 May. The Terra blockchain, which underlies UST and Luna, has also stopped processing transactions twice in less than 24 hours, adding to the problems. Before the catastrophe, $14 billion in TerraUSD was placed in Anchor. There is less than $200 million remaining.
  
The Luna Foundation Guard may be running out of funds as well. Its crypto reserves are down to less than $90 million, and it has no Bitcoin in its wallet. The breakdown also impacted the Terra blockchain, which was momentarily unavailable on Thursday "to avoid governance assaults".

Meanwhile, Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, delisted UST and Luna on Friday. Many traders have sold, believing that the assets would not be able to recoup their losses. Even Bitcoin fans have expressed concern. 
 
Nonetheless, the collapse spread. Luna's Bitcoin hoarding spread to other cryptocurrencies. Traders anticipating a TerraUSD breakdown appear to have sold Bitcoin, leading to the token's falls. This, in turn, undermined demand throughout crypto markets, which lost more than $400 billion in market cap as several tokens, including Bitcoin, Ether, Cardano, and Solana, fell by more than 20%.

The incident has also drawn policymakers' attention back to the absence of regulation around stable coins and the larger cryptocurrency sector. As TerraUSD broke from its peg on 10 May, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen reiterated her appeal for Congress to establish laws governing stable currencies.


Why did TerraUSD and Luna Crash?

Notable is the re-emergence of Covid-related lockdowns in China, with authorities in China placing an international travel ban on Chinese citizens, preventing them from travelling for non-essential reasons. Shanghai, the financial hub of China, has been on lockdown since the end of March, with many people forced to stay at home without access to food, medicine, and other vital supplies. More than 30 cities across China are now under full or partial lockdown, affecting 220 million people. Travel has further been discouraged by a reduction in the issuance of travel documents which has fallen 6% since 2019. Passport renewals for non-essential travel also stopped in February.  

Many people that invest in cryptocurrencies believe that it is the latest version of gold, especially Bitcoin. However, while gold prices have risen 3% in 2022, with the S&P falling by 16%, the same cannot be said for Bitcoin. It fell as low as $25,402, matching its 52-week low. This resulted from a mass sell-off due to the instability of TerraUSD (UST), which failed to hold its 1-to-1 peg with the US dollar and fell as low as $0.45. In turn, the downward selling pressure in the stock market has been due to high US inflation and the aggressive countermeasures of the Fed, with CPI rising by 8.3% in a year and inflation being at its highest since 1981. 

Earlier in the month, the Fed had raised interest points by 50 bps to a target range of 75% and 1%, with the Fed Chair announcing a further 50 bps is on the cards over the next two FOMC meetings. They will also begin allowing $30 billion in US Treasuries and $17.5 billion in mortgage-backed securities to come off its balance sheet starting in June. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February also sparked a mass sell-off in the stock market, which in turn affected cryptos.  

Recently, specifically related to Cardano, there was an increase in its Block size on the main net to improve the transaction performance of the dApps. However, this did not seem to affect the price.  

## Number of ADA Holders Increasing

According to crypto experts, more than 500 projects are currently built on the Cardano blockchain. The token distribution is almost 90% retail, with this number likely to increase. With the number of long-term Cardano (ADA) holders growing by 32% in February, Dr. Shweta, the owner of KIBC1 and 2, further predicts that the coin value of ADA could increase by another 25% as crypto investors stock up on their Cardano holdings.  

An Analyst from Capital.com warned that Cardano investments should be taken with caution. Cryptocurrencies are currently less used as a hedging instrument, and a favourable market for cryptocurrencies, including Cardano, can only occur when the economic and geopolitical situation in the world starts to improve. This, alongside the fact that it is very volatile, makes it hard to predict future performance.  

The current prices are, from a technical point of view, a good opportunity to buy cheap. However, it is on a bearish run in the short term. Only three indicators give bullish signals and 28 bearish as of the week commencing 9 May.

Wallet investor believes that ADA coin price prediction will reach $1.52 in a year and $4.6 by May 2027. Digital Coin Price also believes that the price will rise as high as $0.86 in 2022, $0.97 by 2023, $1.28 in 2025 and $3.06 in 2030. However, Price Predictions ADA price is the most optimistic, with the average price expected to hit $1.15 in 2022, $1.62 in 2023, $3.56 in 2025, $21.35 in 2030, and $32.25 in 2031.

It remained under $1 in the years 2019 and 2020, respectively. ADA regained momentum in 2021, went as high as $1.48 on 15 April, and reached $2.30 on 16 May. It fell to $1.98 on 21 September and fell again to $1.21 on 10 December. It closed the year at $1.31.

Fees are low and liquidity providers can earn a return on their deposits. Following this launch, it declined to $0.75, as did the entire stock and cryptocurrency market following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. ADA is currently trading at 0.54 as at the time this article was written, with a market capitalisation of 18.5bn.
