The PoW consensus mechanism used by [Ethereum](/news/article/why-is-ethereum-going-down) had two main drawbacks.

First, it required a vast amount of computing power, making it both costly and not very eco-friendly.

Second, the mechanism resulted in slower transaction speeds, leading to higher transaction costs, known as gas fees. Bitcoin did not face this issue as it only performs one function. With Ethereum's multiple functions, transactions on the blockchain were slower.

## The birth of Ethereum PoW (ETHW)

To address the challenges of PoW, Ethereum decided to adopt a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Under this system, individuals are chosen to add blocks to the blockchain based on the amount of the native token they hold, in this case, Ether (ETH). This new mechanism requires less electricity, making it more environmentally friendly and appealing to investors. Additionally, it results in faster transactions and lower gas fees.

In December 2020, Ethereum announced that it would be transitioning to a PoS consensus mechanism, known as "[The Merge](/news/article/the-merge-ethereum-nft-impact)", which took place on 15 September, 2022. However, this transition harmed the blockchain's miners, as they were no longer needed and lost their supplemental income.

As a result, a group of anonymous miners established a version of Ethereum based on the original pre-Merge blockchain. This version is called Ethereum Proof-of-Work (ETH PoW). It allows people to continue earning rewards by adding blocks to the blockchain traditionally while utilising the same features as the original Ethereum. The mainnet of this Ethereum fork came online on 15 September, 2022, following The Merge.

Like any blockchain, Ethereum PoW has a native coin. ETHW is used to pay miners and can be bought, sold, or traded on cryptocurrency exchanges.

## ETHW price history

Ethereum Proof-of-Work (ETHW) was officially launched on 15 September, 2022, and reached an all-time high of $141.36 on CoinMarketCap on 8 August, 2022. The value dropped to below $100 the following day. The prices continued to decline over the next few weeks, and by the end of the month, the value of ETHW was $49.58.

As the Merge approached, the ETHW price peaked at $63.29 on 3 September, but fell to a low of $27.03 on 9 September. 

After the launch, there was some growth, and the coin reached a post-Merge high of $14.42 on 16 September. However, it faced a replay message attack which caused the price to drop to a post-Merge low of $4.22 on 19 September. The coin recovered and reached $13.78 on 24 September. It remained above $10 for the next week but fell again, reaching a low of $6.59 on 13 October before recovering to $7.66 the next day.

The collapse of the [FTX](/news/article/is-crypto-dead) exchange into bankruptcy had a negative impact on the market and ETHW, as the coin reached an all-time low of $3.13 on 22 November, with a small attempt at recovery in the following week. On 1 December, 2022, it was trading at $3.60 with a market cap of around $387.5 million, making it the 79th largest cryptocurrency.

The Luna coin news latest reveals that Do Kwon, the founder of collapsed Luna and TerraUSD tokens, and his company Terraform Labs problems are far from over.

In Singapore, 350 investors impacted by the collapse of UST consequently issued a [lawsuit](https://s.wsj.net/public/resources/documents/221028-HCOC2472022-StatementofClaimdated23.09.2022.pdf) against Kwon seeking [$57 million](https://www.investing.com/news/cryptocurrency-news/do-kwon-faces-57-million-fraud-lawsuit-by-terrausd-investors-2926118) in compensation.

In South Korea, prosecutors have frozen assets worth $92 million affiliated with the Terra tokens. The seized assets were taken from Kernel Labs, a tech firm closely related to Terraform Labs.

South Korean authorities issued an arrest warrant for Do Kwon on charges including fraud and market manipulation. His location is still unknown.

## Luna coin's history

Before looking at the Luna coin news latest, let's take a look back. The coin’s history begins in 2019 when it was launched by Terraform Labs, a company founded by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin.

## TerraUSD (UST)

[TerraUSD](/news/article/terra-usd) was a stablecoin operating on the Terra blockchain. Unlike other stablecoins, it was an algorithmic stablecoin that used LUNA coin to maintain its peg to the US dollar. It was not backed by an actual dollar, but by an algorithmic stablecoin.

UST coins were created by burning LUNA coins. They could also be swapped for LUNA. How the two coins worked was if the value of UST went above $1, the equivalent value of LUNA would be burnt, therefore minting more UST, making it less valuable. However, if the price of UST dropped below $1, they would be swapped for LUNA, making UST valuable. The two coins relied on each other for stability.

The relationship between the two cryptocurrencies had them both crashing when UST lost its peg to the US dollar.

## The market crash

On 7 May, 2022, more than $2 billion worth of UST was unstaked from the Anchor protocol, a decentralized money market built on the Terra blockchain. Hundreds of millions worth of the unstaked stablecoin was later quickly liquidated. This resulted in UST dropping in price from $1 to $0.91.

Once the huge amount of UST had been offloaded, the stablecoin started to depeg. Investors started to panic, and many of them sold off their UST, resulting in the minting of more LUNA coins, increasing its public circulation.

## After the crash

The UST crash had a devastating effect on the crypto market. The price of Bitcoin fell to $26,000, down 60% from its November 2021 peak. Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency, lost 30% of its value. Coinbase, one of the largest crypto exchanges, reported a loss of $430 million in its first quarter.

Do Kwon, the Chief Executive of Terraform Labs, tried to salvage the situation by proposing a burn of UST via a tweet on 11 May, 2022. The community passed the proposal, but the burning was not a success. It attempted to burn more UST than existed.

On 13 May, Do Kwon proposed another plan to create a new blockchain and leave behind the failed stablecoin. The community accepted the plan, resulting in a new blockchain and cryptocurrency called Terra 2.0 and Luna 2.0.

## LUNA 2.0

It is a new version of the old LUNA coin. It lives on the new Terra 2.0 blockchain and was created to compensate those who suffered heavy financial losses after the TerraUSD crash. It also provided a way for the Terra network to try and recover from the devastating market crash.

The token was released to the public on 28 May, 2022. It started trading at an impressive price of $18.98 and briefly spiked to $19.45 within the first hour of trading. However, by the end of May, it dropped to trading at $8.88. For the rest of the year, it traded between $2 and $1.

It began 2023 worth $1.26, and is currently trading at $2.09. According to [Coinmarketcap](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/terra-luna-v2/), it is the 93rd largest cryptocurrency by market cap, valued at $305,627,338. 

The coins have a max supply cap of a billion coins. There are currently 202,010,814 of them in public circulation. They have already been listed on several crypto exchanges for purchase, including Binance, KuCoin, and Crypto.com.

LUNA 2.0 differs from its predecessor in that it does not rely on any stablecoin, algorithmic or not, for stability.

## Luna Classic (LUNC)

[LUNC](/news/article/luna-classic-news-future) is the old Terra blockchain's native token. The blockchain is now called Terra Classic. The token maintains all the properties of the original Terra Luna coin.

After the hard fork, LUNC began trading at $0.0001206 per coin. By the end of May, it was worth $0.0001147. By mid-June, it dropped to trading at $0.00006177. Once in a while, it made some slight price appreciation but not enough to warrant attention. It ended 2022 worth $0.0001452.

It began 2023 worth $0.0001451. It is currently worth $0.0001852. According to [Coinmarketcap](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/terra-luna/), it is the 53rd largest cryptocurrency by market cap, valued at $1,107,506,959.

While many people may have lost faith in the cryptocurrency, it is still listed on several crypto exchanges for those who wish to invest in it. Some places to buy the cryptocurrency include Binance, Bybit, Deepcoin, OKX, and Bitrue. The coin has a max supply cap of more than six trillion.

## LUNA 2.0 and LUNC compared

So far, LUNC and LUNA 2.0 are doing pretty well price-wise. The coins are on a positive trajectory, and some investors are a little optimistic about them.

The continued burn of LUNC tokens has not only increased the number of investors buying them but interest in them too. This is why their price has been surging. More than 40 billion LUNC tokens have been burned so far.

LUNC tokens also outshine the new version with a strong community. The token might have rebranded, but it still is supported by a strong community. Its large network of stakeholders continues to go to great lengths to keep it afloat and hopefully get it back to its former glory.

## LUNA 2.0's future

Since its launch, few people have been hopeful about the new Terra token. Several financial analysts have been quite vocal about its quick death and deterring investors from considering adding it to their crypto portfolio.

Founder and CEO of Quantum Economics Mati Greenspan, for example, when asked about the coin's future, stated that it was never meant to live long.

According to Greenspan, the coin was created for a few investors who had heavily invested in its collapsed version as a way to recover some of their losses at the expense of new money coming from the hype. He added that he didn’t see any reason for the coin’s price to ever go up.

Khaleelulla Baig, founder and CEO of Koinbasket, backed up Greenspan's statement by saying the coin had no future because its founder Do Kwon had lost credibility. The project had lost credibility because Do Kwon didn’t build firewalls around the algorithms even when they had an opportunity to do so.

The two are not the only ones who predicted a dismal future for LUNA 2.0 back in 2022. The cryptocurrency has been through a lot. It is obvious why many people would be wary of it and even predict its quick demise.

Anyone can use the ShibaBurn [interface](https://burn.shibaswap.com/) to send their [SHIB](/news/article/shiba-inu-coin-burn) tokens to a remote crypto wallet address, the specifics of which will not be stored. This implies that once the crypto tokens transmit to this wallet address, they can never be recovered and are thus lost forever. The objective is that with each burn, the wealth of the community rises, rewarding the long-term work to create Shiba Inu, said Shiba Inu creators in a blog post.

## The reward for Shibburn users

The Shiba Inu crypto coin, based on the Ethereum (ETH) network, was created by an anonymous developer named Ryoshi. Using the Ethereum request for comment (ERC) version 20 protocol, he has now generated another token called the RYOSHIS VISION token. 

According to details within the blog article, if you burn SHIB tokens, users will be rewarded with RYOSHI VISION tokens. Furthermore, 0.49% of all RYOSHI transactions will be given to SHIB token owners who have burned their tokens.

It is one of the Dogecoin-themed meme coins.

Dogecoin received some promotion from Elon Musk via a series of tweets in December 2019, leading it to become one of the most sought-after altcoins that produced a massive price appreciation.

Subsequently, various altcoins were created, either bearing semblance to the symbol of Dogecoin (such as Shiba Inu, the name of the dog features as Dogecoin's logo), or by having some labelling with Elon Musk's name. These meme coins found success for a while, but the crypto market downturn has erased the meme effect and left the coins to find their feet on their own value.

## Dogelon: the story so far

In April 2022, a petition was started on Change.org urging Binance to list Dogelon Mars on its exchange. At that time, it was approaching a $1 billion market cap and seeking 25,000 signatures. In October 2022, rumours of a potential listing by Binance surfaced, and the token shot up 4,194%. However, this listing did not materialise. In the following months, Dogelon Mars gave up all these gains. This is not the first time rumours of a Binance listing have dogged the token. Some of these rumours date back to 2019, but have never resulted in anything substantial.

The gains seen in the ELON token this January are not linked to any listing rumours. They have come as the entire market witnessed a slight push to the upside. The recent market gains result from a shift towards risky assets after data from the US indicated a cooling of consumer inflation. The drop in the US Consumer Price Index has led to bets that the Federal Reserve would force down the size of future rate hikes, with 25 basis points being the preferred number.

This is exerting a downward pull on Tether (USDT) and other USD-pegged stablecoins, allowing tokens like ELON to enjoy a level of price appreciation. While the 19% gains seen this January is a far cry from some of its earlier improvements, the Dogelon Mars community seems excited by what they perceive as a renewed push by the meme coin to get back some of its old shine. The fact that 18,448 people have signed the Change.org petition as of writing is a testament that there are still those who want to pressure Binance to list the ELON token.

The push to get listed on Binance came when there was no clear-cut information about its tokenomics and what value the project would add to the crypto ecosystem. At the time, it seemed that everything that Binance touched turned to gold. 

Even tokens that were floundering on other exchanges got a shot in the arm that turned them into a speculator's delight. It was clear then that the promoters of the Dogelon Mars petition were out to cash out big from every token that had some kind of association with Elon Musk or Dogecoin, either by name or otherwise. That attempt may have worked in October 2022, but it is clear that it has failed miserably in the long run.

The deepening winter in the crypto market and the fallout of the collapse of FTX, Celsius, AAX, and several crypto exchanges and lending platforms means it will be harder for tokens to command appreciation from just a mention of a purported Binance listing.

## Dogelon Mars: What does the future hold?

If Dogelon Mars is to rise from the ashes, the team behind the token has to return to the drawing board and think out a strategy to shift this coin from being just another meme coin to something of real value to the ecosystem.

They need not look too far. [Shiba Inu](/news/article/shiba-inu-news-will-it-rise) was the first meme coin patterned after Dogecoin. It rode the speculation train for a while until the team decided to reconfigure the project to extract value for both project owners and token holders. The SHIB project now boasts a robust ecosystem of its own, featuring three tokens (BONE, Shiba Inu and Leash) and the Shibarium Layer 2 protocol. A launch into the Metaverse is scheduled for 2023. The recent resurgence of the Shiba Inu and BONE tokens is not accidental. The Dogelon Mars team needs to follow a similar pathway to make the ELON token a thing of value. The meme effect is not going to cut it going forward.

## Conclusion

The current price action on Dogelon's pairing with Tether (the most traded pair of this asset) indicates the brief upside move that has taken it from the low of November/December 2022 to its current levels appears to have stalled. This situation is in keeping with the current expectations.

The 19% move higher was only a drag effect exerted by Bitcoin on the entire market. For Dogelon Mars to witness any real price recovery to its previous highs, there has to be a concerted effort by its developers to create value from the ecosystem. 

Otherwise, the ELON token may fall by the wayside even before the market takes a turn for the better.

There is still time for the developers behind Dogelon to make the necessary changes. Shiba Inu is a classic example of how value addition can make all the difference in a token's valuation.


Is Dogelon Mars a Buy After the Recent Upside?

Tumbles in crypto values have followed the decision of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken to suspend staking.

On 9 February, major coins were in the red, causing a drop in the cryptocurrency market capitalization by 5.45% to $1.02 trillion. Bitcoin fell below $22,000, while Ethereum dropped to $1,549. Doge went down by 10.07% at $0.081.

Meanwhile, US stocks took a hit and erased previous gains, as concerns about potential decisions from the Federal Reserve overshadowed positive reactions to the latest round of corporate earnings reports. The S&P 500 saw a decline of 0.9% and closed at 4,081.50, while the Nasdaq Composite Index experienced a drop of 1.02% and fell at 11,789.58.

[Kraken](/news/article/crypto-exchange-kraken-faces-sec-probe) made a settlement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. As part of the settlement, Kraken agreed to suspend its cryptocurrency staking operations and immediately discontinue its crypto staking-as-a-service platform for US customers. The [SEC](/news/article/sec-probe-giving-advice-for-crypto-trading) charged Kraken for offering unregistered securities and has asked it to pay a $30 million penalty.

## Crypto analyst advice to traders after crypto tumbles

Crypto analyst Rekt Capital has sounded the alarm on [Bitcoin's](/news/article/jim-cramer-says-ignore-bitcoin-hype) impending losses. According to the analyst, the BTC must close above $22,692 to maintain its technical uptrend.

The analyst has cautioned traders about the dangers of making trades based on "fear of missing out" (FOMO) and instead suggests, "if you must FOMO, choose a red day".

Another crypto analyst, Kaleo, views the recent retest of the high-timeframe trend breakout as a supportive factor for Bitcoin. Kaleo believes that the market has yet to experience a significant breakout, which presents an opportunity for investors to accumulate more BTC. Although it may take some time, Kaleo believes that the $30,000 level remains a target for the cryptocurrency.

Crypto Tumbles as Kraken Suspends Staking

The ill-famed Terra crash of May 2022 that tanked the price of LUNA from $86.16 to $0.00005524 overnight cast a dark cloud on the token's previously bright prospects. This article investigates the outcomes of the Terra community's LUNA Classic burn initiative.  

The LUNA Classic burn occasioned by Proposal 5234, which initiated a burning tax of 1.2% and later to 0.2% to increase the token's scarcity, is now the most talked about subject within the crypto community.

The burn, seen as an integral part of the Terra recovery plan, was the community's scheme to reduce the number of LUNA Classic (LUNC) coins in circulation to keep the Terra ecosystem alive. This is possibly one of the reasons the coin's market value has remained at number 47 in the [CoinMarketCap](https://coinmarketcap.com/) at the time of writing.        

## The reason behind the LUNA Classic burn 

The Terra crypto crash saw the supply of LUNA coins in circulation skyrocketing to over 6.5 trillion coins. The community initiated a Terra LUNA burn to try and reduce the supply and potentially increase its value. The token’s recovery plan launched [LUNA 2.0](/news/article/what-is-luna-2.0), meaning that while the LUNA burn would not necessarily save the ill-fated token, it would technically have the same effect in reducing the supply.

Crypto burning refers to removing tokens from circulation by sending them to a crypto address not controlled by anyone. This technical removal from the circulating supply of coins is expected to impact a token’s price action positively. The goal was to launch 1 billion LUNA to drive the token’s price toward $1.        

The new token taking over as LUNA 2.0’s main form, [Luna Classic](/news/article/terra-luna-classic) (LUNC), is driving the burning desire with LUNC holders hoping it will help push up the price. As the list of exchanges accepting LUNC increases, statistics indicate that the Terra Classic community recently burned more than 16 million LUNC tokens within a week, even as it aims to still burn billions more in 2023, having already burned over 37.717 billion LUNC tokens.

## How the LUNA crash affected the crypto market

The woes that led to the collapse of [LUNA cryptocurrency](/news/article/luna-crypto) can be traced back to TerraUSD (UST), the algorithmic stablecoin supported by the Terra ecosystem. Unlike other stablecoins pegged to actual cash reserves, the algorithmic stablecoin UST was run by a computer program supporting the preservation of its price equilibrium. LUNA/UST must be burned or produced to stabilize the price of this coin. However, UST started to depeg after a significant amount of its tokens were dumped. This led to more UST being dumped in panic selling, thereby increasing the supply of LUNA, which led to a knock-on effect that crashed the price. 

After the crash, the inflation of the token circulation supply rose significantly from at least 345 million tokens in circulation to 4.47 billion on May 12, 2022, and 6.5 trillion as of July 2 the same year. The LUNA Foundation Guard (LFG) worked hard to avert a crisis and prevent UST from being depegged by purchasing almost $3 billion worth of Bitcoin (BTC). 

Still, the unfolding crypto crisis poured cold water on the strategy. An effort by LFG to sell their BTC reserves of more than 80,000 BTC in an attempt to save UST is thought to have affected the larger crypto market causing BTC to fall below the $30,000 level.

## Will the burn help LUNA crypto recover? 

Holders of LUNC had hoped that the LUNA Classic burn would mop up excess liquidity and begin the work towards pushing its price towards the $1 mark. However, there’s a need for a significant burn before that goal can be achieved. With numerous LUNA supporters calling for LFG to buy out the burning supply, there are questions on whether TerraForm Labs has the resources to facilitate such massive burns.

LUNA's chance of returning anywhere near its previous highs of close to $100 is still tied to its ability to burn a significant portion of its current circulating supply and come down to close to 350 million tokens. While that remains the goal of the UST and LUNA's rehabilitation plan, how that can be accomplished remains a mystery. The [recent announcement](https://twitter.com/binance/status/1613816393723686912) by Binance Exchange that it would support the Terra Classic LUNC upgrade could create a positive impact and revive the decreasing on-chain burn rate of the LUNC tokens experienced during the last few weeks.

## Conclusion 

The Terra Classic community recently, through governance proposals [11242](https://classic-agora.terra.money/t/proposal-deprecate-seigniorage-reward-policy-and-increase-gas-fees-by-5x/49378/132) and Proposal 11243, effectively increased the burn rate while reducing contributions to the community pool. Still, the massive rally at the beginning of January didn't quite hold. There's still a remote possibility that [LUNA Classic](/news/article/luna-classic-news-future) could rise eventually and reach a desirable market cap and become a worthwhile investment.


LUNA Classic Burn - Will LUNC Rally Last?

News of a drop in the US Consumer Price Index to one-year lows rubbed off nicely on the cryptocurrency market, as [holders of Bitcoin](/news/article/bitcoin-surge-hits-new-heights), Shiba Inu, and several other crypto assets enjoyed some nice gains.

Shiba Inu holders must be heaving a sigh of relief. Having spent the latter part of 2021 and 2022 dipping their fingers in cold water after having them badly burnt, they are enjoying some handy comfort from the recent price appreciation. Several developments have emerged in the Shiba ecosystem in recent times. The SHIB team has presented the basic concepts behind Shibarium, the Layer 2 blockchain of the SHIB ecosystem.

One of the takeaways from the release is the new ability granted to users and Shiba Inu holders to access Shibarium's test tokens through private test networks.

This is in addition to removing one zero from its price (some of us were starting to lose count). There is also some buzz around a rumoured 2023 launch for the long-awaited SHIB Metaverse.

Speaking of the Shiba ecosystem tokens, one of them is already attracting huge interest. The BONE token, which will power all transactions on Shibarium's Layer 2 protocol, is experiencing a resurgence.

After hitting exchanges at $0.4 in June 2022, it reached its all-time high of $2.39 on 30 August 2022 before hitting Q4 2022 lows at $0.60. Since the 22 November 2022 lows, the price of this Shibarium token has more than doubled. This has positively impacted the number of addresses holding Shiba Inu, growing from 1,280K on 11 January to 1,283K on 17 January. The largest Shiba token owner owns 41.03% of the total supply, according to data from Coinmarketcap.com. The next top holder is a distant second, holding just 5.59% of the total supply.

## Is BONE bringing value?

It isn't easy to quantify this. Undoubtedly, the Shiba Inu token has drawn some inspiration for its one-week performance from the BONE token's rise. However, it is too early to say if this correlation will endure or eventually break down. For now, Shiba Inu token holders may only care a little as long as the token keeps heading in the right direction.

However, remember to save the recovery phrase of 12 random words you will get while creating a new self-custody wallet. This is the key to your crypto, as anyone with your recovery phrase has access to your crypto. Keep it safe and protected, and do not share it with anyone.

Once done, fund it with crypto, which you can buy directly within the wallet or transfer from an exchange or another wallet.

## Swap tokens to get FTM

Now go to the DEX of your choice and click "Connect to a Wallet". There, select the wallet you want to connect to. Once connected, use the swap feature, which is generally available on the main page.

Once there, click on the crypto asset icon you have and want to swap from, such as [USDT](/coins/usdt) or [ETH](/coins/eth), enter the number of tokens you wish to swap, and select the token you want to swap for, which is FTM in this case. Finally, click on the swap button.
