**DeFi**: Here we have the operational _core_ of the cryptocurrency phenomenon.  DeFi is an acronym for _decentralized finance_.  It’s hard to accurately define a $100 billion financial technology that is anticipated to bring down Big Finance and all those traditional, money-hungry bankers, but by using [smart contracts](https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/smart-contracts.asp) that operate using DeFi technology, it is precisely what DeFi is being developed to achieve.

**dApps**: _Decentralized Applications_ are like any digital app you might find on a smartphone or laptop, with the bonus of employing blockchain technology to prevent users’ data from falling into the hands of the company who is behind the app.  For example, cryptocurrency is decentralized money, and dApps are decentralized applications.

**NFT (Non-fungible Tokens)**: The Christie's auction house sold perhaps the most well-known NFT in 2021 - just a [smattering of images](https://www.christies.com/features/Monumental-collage-by-Beeple-is-first-purely-digital-artwork-NFT-to-come-to-auction-11510-7.aspx) done by a digital artist known as _Beeple_…that brought in nearly $70 million. 

NFTs burst onto the stage in 2021 and they rightfully demand our attention.  In the simplest terms, Non-fungible tokens are pieces of digital content that are linked to the blockchain, the same technologies that power cryptocurrencies like [Bitcoin](/coins/btc) and [Ethereum](/coins/eth).  NFTs are entirely unique and not interchangeable, which means that no two NFTs are alike.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but as Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies continue being adopted by mainstream society, the above terms will grow increasingly more important as more traditional investors dip their toes into the cryptocurrency market.

## Uniswap Labs has recruited respected former Washington operative Hari Sevugan.

The appointment of the former senior spokesman for President Barack Obama comes amid efforts to define a regulatory strategy for crypto in the US capital.

## Sevugan Has Tech Experience

Sevugan brings an impressive CV, including serving as Obama’s senior spokesperson for the 2008 presidential campaign, the deputy campaign manager for brand and media for former Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s 2020 presidential campaign and as the national press secretary for the Democratic National Committee.

CoinDesk quoted Sevugan as saying he had some tech experience as well, having ‘worked with several tech companies and with founders at a political-tech incubator’.

It goes on to quote him as saying: ‘Politics, when done right, is also about taking complex issues of policy and making them understandable to everyone so everyone feels a sense of ownership over those decisions. Former Obama Aide Joins Uniswap

So you’re into all things Crypto and you no doubt know about DeFi, but have you heard about GameFi?

Don’t feel left out if you don’t know what I’m talking about, this is all fairly new even to longtime HODL’ers.

Crypto games are video games that run on a cryptocurrency network and include a completely or partially distributed ledger architecture, providing players verifiable ownership over the virtual products contained in the games.

But where do the roots of this movement come from?

2003 is considered the year that in-app purchases entered online games in a really big way, from obscure role-playing games about medieval knights to virtual world Second Life, and even corporate-backed entries like Disney’s ToonTown Online.

Eventually, there had to be a huge moving force that would change the world forever- three letters that kickstart this story and lay the foundation for what we will likely be experiencing now and in the future in regards to virtual currency: WoW.

Released in 2004, World of Warcraft is arguably the most successful, massively multiplayer online role-playing game of all time, at its peak, it had upwards of ten million users in the game. The in-game currency of WoW, simply titled “Gold,” can be used for anything imaginable, from items to services with increasingly esoteric means, like food that makes your character spit fireballs.

A Side-effect of this? The line between digital and real currency begin to blur.

By the late 2000s, that line between virtual currency and fiat was one that individuals and enterprises alike were bouncing back and forth over for profit. Value could be digital. Value could be anything. And this was no longer just limited to nerdy kids. Farmville, popular with kids and parents alike, posted revenues of $235 million in the first quarter in 2010, most of which was from in-game purchases for digital goods.

Fast forward to 2021 and almost all mobile and console games including Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite have in-app purchases. Welcome to the age of GameFi.

This is no doubt moulding the youth into a generation that feels incredibly comfortable with digital currency transactions.

Axie Infinity is among the biggest—and most polarizing—of these new games, which allow players to accumulate tradeable crypto coins. To investors like billionaire Mark Cuban and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who were part of a $7.5 million funding round for Vietnamese game-maker Sky Mavis in May, it’s a gateway to crypto for people playing around the world.

Those players are banking on the success of Bitcoin and others in hopes of turning them into high-value tokens.

Other projects that include some of the most popular coins in the GameFi space: Uniswap, Chainlink, Dai, ZRX, Maker, Aave, and PancakeSwap.

If you’ve taken an interest in blockchain and cryptocurrency, you will have seen or heard the word ‘DeFi’.

You may know it is an abbreviation of Decentralised Finance, or Decentralized Finance if you use American spelling.

## But what does that mean? What is [DeFi](/news/tag/defi)?

### What’s It for?

Here are just a few examples of what decentralised finance is doing for us right now:

- allowing us to send money anywhere around the world quickly and cheaply
- allowing is to store money, in crypto wallets, and earn higher yields than with traditional banks
- allowing peer-to-peer borrowing and lending
- allowing us to trade cryptocurrencies at any time
- allowing us to trade tokenised versions of investments like equities, funds, other financial assets, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) 24 hours a day, seven days a week
- expanding crowdsourcing

Decentralised Finance is a developing financial system built on secure distributed ledgers, similar to those used by cryptocurrencies.

The system essentially eliminates the control of banks and other financial institutions over money, monetary goods, and financial services.

It is inextricably linked to blockchain, the decentralised, immutable public ledger that underpins cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. The idea is that no one entity has control over or can manipulate the transaction ledger.

The Ethereum network, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency marketplace, is not only the foundation for the cryptocurrency Ether. It is also the basis for developing additional blockchain programmes, or applications, sometimes known as dApps. These programmes, or apps, can fulfil necessary financial services previously only available through institutions like banks, with Ether used to pay transaction fees.

## Understanding DeFi

The starting point is to see how centralised finance differs from decentralised finance.

In the centralised finance system, we rely on banks. These are companies, with the ultimate goal of making a profit, which keep your money. There are then third parties that enable the flow of money between parties, usually charging for the service.

For example, let’s say you used your credit card to buy a loaf of bread. The charge is sent from the store to an acquiring bank, which then sends the card information to the credit card network.

The network cancels the charge and asks your bank for payment. Your bank approves the bill, transmits it to the network, and then delivers it to the store via the acquiring bank.

Merchants must be willing to pay for their ability to use credit and debit cards, so each entity in the chain receives payment for its services.

In a decentralised financial system, intermediaries are removed by allowing you, merchants, and companies to conduct transactions directly using emerging technology like blockchain.

Peer-to-peer financial networks with security protocols, connectivity, software, and hardware improvements are used to accomplish this.

You can lend, trade, and borrow from anywhere you have an internet connection using software that records and validates financial transactions in distributed financial databases. A distributed database can be accessed from numerous places; it collects and aggregates data from all users and validates it using a consensus method.

## How Does it Work?

The most common way financial services are provided in a DeFi system is with cryptocurrency and smart contracts. This eliminates the need for intermediaries, such as guarantors.

Take, for example, lending. Users can lend their cryptocurrency and earn interest immediately in a decentralised system, rather than waiting. Borrowers can receive a loan instantly.

DeFi allows peer-to-peer trades without a broker, means you can save your cryptocurrency with potentially much higher interest rates than banks, and buy derivatives such as stock options and futures contracts.

These are just a few of the services available.

As mentioned earlier, some users employ dApps, which are primarily available on the Ethereum network, to facilitate peer-to-peer business transactions.

DeFi is open source, which means that its protocols and apps are theoretically available for users to examine and improve. As a result, users can create their own dApps by mixing and matching protocols to uncover unique combinations of opportunities.

## Earning with DeFi

There are many ways people are trying to profit from decentralised finance. Perhaps most notable is using Ethereum-based lending apps to create passive income. Here users essentially lend their money out and earn interest on the loans.

Yield farming is another approach, although one considered a riskier practice and usually performed by more skilled traders. Here users search through DeFi tokens to find prospects for higher returns. It is, however, complicated and opaque.
