Elon Musk's Twitter is such a staple within the crypto community that when Elon Tweets something, whatever words he uses in the Tweet get turned into a crypto coin, occasionally amassing up to millions of dollars’ worth in market cap. Until recently, Elon's Twitter was the only account people would create coins based on Tweets. This changed on January 25, 2022, when Elon tweeted at McDonald's, saying: 'I will eat a Happy Meal on TV if @McDonalds accepts Dogecoin.' This provoked McDonald's into replying with 'only if @tesla accepts grimacecoin'. 

Grimace coincides with Ronald McDonald within the McDonald's universe. He was first introduced in a TV commercial back in 1972. This crossover of Elon, McDonald's, and the crypto community saw many new tokens created that night called Grimace Coin. Only one survived the night and continued to make a run up to $12 million in market cap over the next four days.

How Elon Musk’s Twitter Account is So Influential

Can an Elon Musk tweet really impact the value of cryptocurrency? Short answer, yes.

In financial markets, valuations are usually primarily driven by fundamentals such as company-specific DCF, FCF, and multiples analyses. That said, in the short term, markets are often irrational, deviating from fundamentals, and can stay that way for longer than investors can remain solvent, yet they always correct themselves. In contrast, what moves prices in the crypto market? Is it the greater fool's theory or the information content effect of news?

It is a decentralised industry fuelled by a desire to remove the middleman. To democratise payments and credit while removing the ability of one party to influence the market. However, it seems like sway is still driving valuations.

If this wasn't enough proof, the entrepreneur has also profited from his tweets and crypto trading. He mocked [Bitcoin](/coins/btc) for years, comparing it to fiat currencies. Yet, last year Tesla announced a $1.5 billion investment into the currency, which sent its valuation soaring by 20%. Tesla later announced it would accept BTC payments, sold off part of its Bitcoin holdings, and then canceled accepting BTC payments, which depressed the price by an approximate 12% on the day.

## Is it Market Manipulation?

Under UK regulations, market manipulation is illegal and can be approached by civil and criminal regimes. Both routes would refer to statements and actions attempting to manipulate market sentiment and, thus, influence prices. Some experts in securities law argue that Elon's disruptive behavior towards crypto exchanges could be perceived as market manipulation. Many others are not convinced. Regardless, he has been warned off tweeting on subjects that could sway markets and was fined $20 million by the SEC. Yet, it doesn't seem like his influence has faded one bit in the eyes of investors.

## Implications for the Entire Crypto Market

Individuals like Elon Musk having so much influence in the crypto community has been a concern for the SEC and regulators in the US for years. However, it was when traditional investors started losing their savings over these indicators that introducing more stringent regulations became a hot topic. Hester M. Peirce, a pro-crypto commissioner with the SEC, has proposed an alternative solution – providing more clarity governing the crypto market to avoid losing talent and innovators to countries with laxer policies over crypto.

As regulators try to introduce further protections for crypto holders, it will be interesting to observe what other factors prove to drive valuations in the market.


An Elon Musk Tweet Can Move Markets

Tyler Winklevoss, a US investor and the co-founder of Winklevoss Capital Management and Gemini cryptocurrency exchange, called the Twitter culture "toxic" after the social network-residing community called out Tesla's owner Elon Musk for becoming its biggest individual shareholder.

Winklevoss said the resistance inside Twitter to Musk's attempt to ensure that it is a platform for free speech has been “alarming”. 

“These people are committed to Soviet-style censorship. Their beliefs and ideology are patently un-American. It's time to clean the Augean stables,” he wrote.
Winklevoss was optimistic about this acquisition even when it seemed like one of Musk's jokes. He warned that the Twitter community would see in a short time how malevolent and politically directed the "shadow banning" and algorithms were and how dangerous this all was for the democracy in total.

## Breaking Corruption Between Big Tech and Media

However, he called out the big tech saying that this buyout will finally break the corrupted circle between tech behemoths and the corporate media once Musk restarts Twitter. Winklevoss also commented that Twitter stock has been flat for many years, and now, Musk has come to change this. He called Musk the "most proven and successful entrepreneur in the world" and added that this is a great time for free speakers.

Tyler is also known to be a prominent opponent of Biden’s plan to make massive investments in America’s social safety net. He recently contributed a maximum legal amount to the conservative democratic senator Krysten Sinema who demanded cuts to bring down the cost of the $3.5 trillion plan.

Together with his twin brother Cameron, Tyler is believed to be the first Bitcoin billionaire. 

The brothers are known for giving money to numerous cryptocurrency and blockchain-related businesses, Gemini exchange being one of them. Apart from Bitcoin, he is also one of the most agile Ethereum investors. Brothers stated together that they own 1% of all Bitcoin in circulation.

## Gemini Partners with Mastercard

Recently, [Winklevoss](https://twitter.com/tyler/status/1518612871239843840) announced that Gemini has partnered with Mastercard and WebBank to launch the Gemini Credit Card that brings DeFi together with the traditional financial system (TradFi). 

Tyler founded Gemini back in 2014, making it one of the most successful digital currency exchanges and custodians that allows customers to buy, sell, and store digital assets. It is a New York trust company regulated by the SEC.

The Winklevoss brothers featured in the film 'The Social Network', about the origins of Facebook. This film suggested that the original idea of Facebook was theirs. While students at Harvard at the same time as Mark Zuckerberg, Tyler and Cameron approached him to develop their social network project, ConnectU. Zuckerberg went on to create Facebook.

In August 2012, they purchased $11 million worth of [Bitcoin](/coins/btc). At that time, Bitcoin wasn't even worth $10.

Now the Winklevoss twins own at least 150,000 BTC. This makes a fortune in Bitcoin of over $6.255 billion. Potentially in the future, that can make them as rich, and possibly even richer, than Mark Zuckerberg.

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, recently asked his Twitter followers whether or not he should sell 10% of his stocks shares in the company.

Musk ran a poll on Twitter that gave people the chance to vote for their decision. He tweeted: **"Much is made lately of unrealized gains being a means of tax avoidance, so I propose selling 10% of my Tesla stock. Do you support this?"**

The results showed that 57.9% voted yes- he should sell 10% of his Tesla stock. In total, around 3.5 million followers voted.

Musk shared an image of his puppy a few days ago which helped to boost SHIB up the market ranks, but after he has admitted not owning any SHIB, the meme coin is reportedly down 15%.

Regulation in the US will not destroy cryptocurrency, but it could slow development. That was the warning given by Tesla boss Elon Musk this week.

Speaking at the Code Conference in California, Musk suggested the US Government should avoid regulating crypto markets.

He said: ‘It is not possible to, I think, destroy crypto, but it is possible for governments to slow down its advancement.’

Directly asked whether the US Government should actively regulate the crypto industry, Musk said: ‘I would say, “Do nothing”.’

Musk has publicly supported some digital coins is positive about the part crypto will play in addressing issues with traditional financial systems. At the Code Conference, however, he accepted the impact of cryptocurrency has limits.

He said: ‘I wouldn’t say that I’m a massive cryptocurrency expert. I think there’s some value in cryptocurrency, but I wouldn’t say it’s the second coming of the Messiah.’

## Power Shortages

During the interview, Musk addresses recent developments in crypto mining and regulation in China.

Tougher measures to crack down on cryptocurrency trading, including stronger systems to monitor crypto transactions, have been outlined by China’s central bank.

Musk believes the move is power-related, but electrical, not political.

He said the crackdown was due to the country’s ‘significant electricity generation issues’.

Musk added: ‘Part of it may actually be due to electricity shortages in many parts of China. A lot of South China right now is having random power outages, because the power demand is higher than expected.

‘Crypto mining might be playing a role in that.’

However, he acknowledges the Chinese Government may have issues with decentralised nature of cryptocurrencies may present a challenge for the Chinese government.

He said: ‘I suppose cryptocurrency is fundamentally aimed at reducing the power of a centralised government. They don’t like that.’

Elon Musk Tells Regulators to ‘Do Nothing’ on Crypto

It looks like Elon Musk has done it again. A seemingly innocuous three-word tweet from the Tesla and SpaceX founder saw a spike in the value of little-known Floki.

Musk simply shared a picture of his new Shiba Inu puppy with the caption “Floki has arrived”. Sweet sentiment, but the tweet went viral and spikes in the value of cryptocurrency with similar names were soon recorded.

The biggest winner was Shiba Floki which saw a 958.09% surge within one day of the tweet, according to reports.

## Floki Token Increase

Floki Inu witnesses increases in excess of 59% in a 24-hour period. Others, including Floki Shiba and Super Floki, also saw value rises.

It is not the first time a tweet from Musk has apparently impacted on markets; comments around Dogecoin and Bitcoin have seen values change.

Dogecoin prices also seemed to be affected by the Floki tweet. Perhaps this is unsurprising as the tweet featured a picture of a Shiba Inu dog. Dogecoin gained by 0.36% following the latest post from Musk, while Baby Doge Coin saw a 24-hour surge of 45.3%

## Shiba Inu Rises

Previous tweets from Musk have had a similar impact on Floki-related cryptocurrencies. Last month, when he said he would name his new pet Floki, Shiba Inu saw a 16% price rise.
