Elon Musk has a history of engaging in keyboard wars on Twitter with many notable names but one of the most infamous is his ongoing spat with Bill Gates.

It all supposedly kicked off in July 2020, the CEO of Microsoft suggested on CNBC's Squawk Box that Musk should reduce the number of controversial vaccination comments he makes and instead concentrate on developing electric cars and rockets.

Earlier this year in a tweet published, Elon Musk accused the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates of placing bets up to half a billion dollars that the Tesla stock price would decline.

Bill Gates responded to Elon Musk by stating that shorting Tesla does not entail betting against the future of the environment or the electric automobiles industry.

[In an interview with the BBC](https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-61329167), Gates stated that his wager against Tesla has nothing to do with his advocacy for environmentally friendly initiatives and policies at the government level. 

"Climate change has absolutely nothing to do with it. I have various avenues for diversification", he stated in the interview. 

The growing market share of electric vehicles will inevitably give rise to increased levels of market competitiveness. There is a distinction between consumers adopting electric cars and businesses reaching their maximum potential value.

In an interview with French Youtuber Hugo Décrypte, Bill Gates mentioned he has invested a significant amount in sustainable finance to support companies that solve environmental and social issues.

"I give a lot more to climate change than Elon or anyone else," Gates said. "I give a lot of philanthropic dollars, I back companies - you know electric cars are about 16% of emissions, so we also need to solve that other 84%."

It is worth noting that Bill Gates plans to [donate virtually all of his wealth to the Bill and Malinda Gates foundation](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jul/15/bill-gates-billions-fotune-donate-foundation), a non-profit dedicated to fighting poverty, disease and inequity around the world.

Bill Gates Tesla price warning annoys Elon Musk

According to Tesla's newest Q2 financial statement, Bitcoin was one of the essential items that impacted the operating income.

As per the official data, the operating income improved year-to-year to $2.5 billion in the second quarter, resulting in a 14.6% operating margin.

"As of the end of Q2, we have converted approximately 75% of our Bitcoin purchases into fiat currency," Tesla's statement said, adding: "Conversions in Q2 added $936M of cash to our balance sheet."

However, during the regular quarterly investor call, the company's CEO, Elon Musk, revealed that even though Tesla holds Dogecoin as well, it didn't convert any of that into fiat.

 "We still have it," Musk claimed.

Just a month before, speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha, Musk confirmed he supports Dogecoin, reiterating that Tesla accepts the currency as payment for its products. He also announced that his company SpaceX intends to do the same.

Musk says he intends to 'personally support' Dogecoin in response to the many people who are not wealthy and have encouraged him to buy and support DOGE.

## Tesla’s Musk – Bitcoin and Dogecoin advocate

Back before, Musk was [pretty vocal](/news/article/elon-musk-bitcoin) about owning Dogecoin. However, he never confirmed that Tesla or SpaceX have it in their portfolios. It is not known whether the assets left in crypto are remaining Bitcoin or, perhaps, Dogecoin.

If we try to calculate how much Bitcoin Tesla has left, we should look at the sheet where it says the company owned 42,000 Bitcoin heading into the second quarter.

After the company sold 75%, there should be 10,500 at the quarter's end. We can only presume that the snapshot was taken somewhere at the end of June when fiscal Q2 ended. At the time, 1 Bitcoin was worth somewhere between $18,750 and $20,300. This could mean that there are 10,500 coins, of which $197 to $213 million are Bitcoin.

Musk has been a crypto advocate for years and was pretty influential in market moves. In 2021 he helped Bitcoin jump after admitting Tesla bought some for its corporate vault.

Grimace coincides with Ronald McDonald within the McDonald's universe. He was first introduced in a TV commercial back in 1972. Only one survived the night and continued to make a run up to $12 million in market cap over the next four days.

## Wal-Mart Files Paperwork Signaling Expansion into Crypto and NFTs

The world’s second largest retailer (behind Amazon) has apparently seen enough, and now mega-force, Wal-Mart, wants in on the crypto-craze after watching how remarkably well digital assets performed in 2021.  Wal-Mart has already [submitted formal applications](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=97197301&caseType=SERIAL_NO&searchType=statusSearch) with the US Patent office for selling virtual goods, and another filing suggests that the retailer wants to begin offering Non-fungible Tokens (NFTs) as well. 

NFTs are perhaps the biggest juggernauts to come out of the digital assets market in 2021.  While an NFT isn’t entirely the same as a cryptocurrency, they share many characteristics.  The key distinction is that NFTs are _non-fungible_ tokens, whereas cryptocurrencies are.  Fungible simply means “tradeable.” 

Based on a review of the patent office filings, Wal-Mart has been putting an extensive amount of time and considerable resources into preparing for their inevitable expansion into the digital assets market.

They’re not alone.  Given the growing popularity of the metaverse, and since Facebook announced a rebranding to “[Meta](/news/article/facebook-metaverse-nft/),” signaling their intention to expand into the metaverse, there has been a “gold rush” of sorts among many major brands to adopt their own forms of crypto-currencies, NFTs, or both.

## Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, Pumps Dogecoin with (another) Tweet

Is it a move to pump the market?  Who’s to know for sure, but after weeks of suggesting the possibility, Tesla’s celebrity CEO, Elon Musk, officially announced that the all-electric car maker would begin accepting the cryptocurrency [Dogecoin](/coins/doge) for Tesla branded merchandise.  The announcement was made [via Musk’s Twitter account](https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1481873421390680065) on Jan. 14th.

It’s been a remarkable journey for the cryptocurrency that was originally launched as a mockery.  Most crypto enthusiasts know well enough by now that favourable news like this can be announced for the sole purpose of _pumping_ the value of digital assets like Dogecoin.  In this case, the Tesla CEO’s Twitter announcement sent Dogecoin skyward, but only momentarily.  Dogecoin shot up from .17 cents per coin up to .20, but then fell back to pre-announcement levels within 72 hours.

## Arkansas offering Bitcoin and a Bicycle to Young Tech Talent

If living in the US ever had any appeal, then the state of Arkansas might be worth checking out.  In addition to being the only state in America with [an active diamond mine](https://www.thetravel.com/finding-a-diamond-at-crater-of-diamonds/) that the public can visit, the [Northwest Arkansas Council (NAC)](https://nwacouncil.org/), in collaboration with the southern state’s major employers, is offering remote employees an incentive that includes $10,000 in bitcoin…_if_ you’re willing to relocate to the state.

Thousands of prospects have already submitted their interest.  Conditions are that you must be 24 years old and have at least two years of work experience.  The only ostensible catch is you need to “set up shop” within six months of being accepted and willing to sign a one-year lease or buy a home in the Arkansas area.

“This move was designed to attract more participants in blockchain technologies to help build up the region’s tech economy," says NAC Communications Director, Nate Green.

Wal-Mart, Tesla Lead Early 2022 Crypto Headlines

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, recently asked his Twitter followers whether or not he should sell 10% of his stocks shares in the company.

Tesla became the first car company in the market to be worth more than $1 trillion in the past year. This may be a good opportunity for investors with potentially high returns, as the company has shown previously.

## Musk Has $3.6 billion in Shares

Tesla shares are now around $363.54, meaning Musk's shares in the company are worth something in the ballpark of $3.6 billion. When you compare that to his net worth outside of Tesla it seems like nothing. He is currently estimated to be worth over $20 billion (via [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/europe)).

Musk ran a poll on Twitter that gave people the chance to vote for their decision. He tweeted: **"Much is made lately of unrealized gains being a means of tax avoidance, so I propose selling 10% of my Tesla stock. Do you support this?"**

The results showed that 57.9% voted yes- he should sell 10% of his Tesla stock. In total, around 3.5 million followers voted.



Will Elon Musk Sell £21bn of Tesla Stocks?

Electric car-maker [Tesla](https://www.tesla.com/en_GB/) yesterday reported record revenue and profits for the third quarter of the year.

However, Tesla's accounts also record a $51 million impairment charge relating to its bitcoin investment.

The company, led by CEO Elon Musk, reported no new purchases or sales of digital assets in its Q3 accounts, just like in Q2. However, under accounting rules for digital assets a company must record an impairment charge if the value of an asset it holds falls during the quarter it is reporting on. Any increase in value is not reported as a gain on the accounts.

## Tesla Purchased 41.5 billion Bitcoin

It is reported that because Tesla holds crypto as an 'indefinite-lived intangible asset' the company is required by accountancy rules to record the value of bitcoin at the time of purchase. If the BTC value falls well below the price at the time of purchase, Tesla must write down the value of its holdings as an impairment charge. 

It was announced in February that Tesla had purchases $1.5 billion-worth of bitcoin and sales of around 10% of that holding saw Tesla's balance sheet later boosted by some $272 million.

Plans to allow the purchase of Tesla vehicles with bitcoin were suspended in May, amid apparent concerns about the environmental impact of the cryptocurrency. However, over the summer, Musk stated that the plan could 'likely' be resurrected if ecological concerns were addressed.

Tesla Records $51m Bitcoin Impairment Charge

It looks like Elon Musk has done it again. A seemingly innocuous three-word tweet from the Tesla and SpaceX founder saw a spike in the value of little-known Floki.

Musk simply shared a picture of his new Shiba Inu puppy with the caption “Floki has arrived”. Sweet sentiment, but the tweet went viral and spikes in the value of cryptocurrency with similar names were soon recorded.

The biggest winner was Shiba Floki which saw a 958.09% surge within one day of the tweet, according to reports.

## Floki Token Increase

Floki Inu witnesses increases in excess of 59% in a 24-hour period. Others, including Floki Shiba and Super Floki, also saw value rises.

It is not the first time a tweet from Musk has apparently impacted on markets; comments around Dogecoin and Bitcoin have seen values change.

Dogecoin prices also seemed to be affected by the Floki tweet. Perhaps this is unsurprising as the tweet featured a picture of a Shiba Inu dog. Dogecoin gained by 0.36% following the latest post from Musk, while Baby Doge Coin saw a 24-hour surge of 45.3%

## Shiba Inu Rises

Previous tweets from Musk have had a similar impact on Floki-related cryptocurrencies. Last month, when he said he would name his new pet Floki, Shiba Inu saw a 16% price rise.
